Jeremy Jennings (KCL)

This module is concerned with a pivotal chapter in the history of political economy. It focuses upon the two major theorists identified with the analysis of capitalism: Adam Smith and Karl Marx. By closely examining the writings of both authors the course will enable students to deepen their understanding of the ideas that have shaped our thinking about how markets work, and the benefits or otherwise that they produce. Texts to be studied in depth include The Theory of Moral SentimentsThe Wealth of Nations, and Capital. The course addresses the rise of political economy as a key episode in the history of modern political thought and in the process explores figures such as Malthus, Ricardo and Mill who are essential to understanding either the thought or legacy of Smith and Marx. Beyond this the texts under examination will raise problems relating to broader issues in political theory and practice.
